Von Willebrand’s Disease |
|
As I earlier mentioned, vWD is a blood clotting disease that is inherited recessively. Meaning, both parents must be carriers of the disease for offspring to be affected or have the disease. Carriers are defined as having one copy of the gene that causes the disease and affected dogs have two copies. Since one gene comes from each parent, they both must have the gene to pass along.
Several breeders in other countries are having a hard time facing reality. Realty is … a DNA test is available to see if GWP’s have a copy of this gene. Knowing that makes managing the disease easy. That same test is available for DD’s as well.
A gentlemen is tracking the results; as a public database is not available for this data. The results are voluntarily given from owners/breeders and he publishes that information to those that ask.
You can contact him and ask him to add you to the mailing list of vWD test results. His work has caused some trouble with some breeders/owners in other countries. Some feel that publishing this information is detrimental to the breed. That is contrary to the truth. Publishing shows a commitment to reducing and eliminating the incidence of this disease. In knowledge comes strength.
