GWP FAQ’S |

The AKC breed standard says “Of sound, reliable temperament, … is at times aloof but not unfriendly towards strangers; a loyal and affectionate companion who is eager to please and enthusiastic to learn.” The Kennel Club in UK’s breed standard says “Gentle, affectionate and even tempered. Alert, biddable and very loyal.”. The VDD standard says “He is an intelligent dog that learns easily and enthusiastically. He displays a mental stability that makes him well suited for the wide range of demands of versatile work. He is passionate when working and has the endurance to get the job done. Yet despite this level of drive when hunting, he is able to settle down and concentrate on challenging tracking assignments.” What does this tell you? They are INTELLIGENT, PERSISTENT, sometimes RELENTLESS, LOYAL—ONE family dogs that can be “sharp”. One of my friends describes them as “Perhaps the closest comparison to the GWP temperament is the typical terrier. These dogs are highly possessive. They are smart, proud, ‘stand-up’ dogs. If challenged by another dog, or seriously mistreated by humans, or when their home and family are in danger, a typical GWP is quite capable of fighting or biting.”
